What is the use of wine bottle caps?

When opening a bottle of wine, in addition to the T-shaped cork, there is also a metal cap. What exactly does the metal cap do?

1. Prevent pests

In the earliest days, wine producers added metal caps to the top of the bottle to prevent rodents from gnawing on corks and to prevent worms such as weevil from burrowing into the bottle.

The bottle caps at that time were made of lead. Later, people realized that lead was poisonous, and the lead remaining on the bottle mouth would enter the wine when pouring it, which would endanger human health. Although people have now realized that the insect-proof function of bottle caps seems to be useless, they have not abandoned the use of metal bottle caps.

2. Avoid fake goods

If someone buys a bottle of high-end wine without a cap, removes the cork, drinks the wine inside, and refills it with fake wine. The use of tin caps can suppress the rampant fake wine in the era when the technology was not developed enough.

Wine caps seem to be optional nowadays, and some wineries even try to stop using them, perhaps to make the wine bottles look better, or to reduce waste due to environmental protection. But there are only a few wineries that do this, so most of the wines on the market still have wine caps.

3. Contains wine information

Wine bottle caps can reflect some wine information. Some wines carry information such as “the name of the wine, the brand logo”, etc., to increase the information of the product.
