Why do wines use screw caps?

Now more and more people are accepting screw caps. The perception of screw caps by drinkers around the world is undergoing a transformation.

1. Avoid the problem of cork pollution

Cork contamination is caused by a chemical called trichloroanisole (TCA), which can be found in natural cork materials.

Cork-tainted wines smelled of mold and wet cardboard, with a 1 to 3 percent chance of this contamination. It is for this reason that 85% and 90% of wines produced in Australia and New Zealand, respectively, are bottled with screw caps to avoid the problem of cork contamination.

2. The screw cap can ensure stable wine quality

Cork is a natural product and cannot be exactly the same, thus sometimes imparting different flavor characteristics to the same wine. The wines with screw caps are stable in quality, and the taste has not changed much compared to the wines previously sealed with corks.

3. Maintain the freshness of the wine without compromising the ageing potential

Originally, it was thought that red wines that needed to be aged could only be sealed with corks, but today screw caps also allow a small amount of oxygen to pass through. Whether it’s a Sauvignon Blanc that needs to stay fresh, fermented in stainless steel tanks, or a Cabernet Sauvignon that needs to be matured, the screw cap will meet your needs.

4. The screw cap is easy to open

Wines that are bottled with screw caps will never have the problem of not being able to open the bottle. Also, if the wine is not finished, just screw on the screw cap. If it is a cork-sealed wine, you have to turn the cork upside down first, and then force the cork back into the bottle.

So, that’s why screw caps are more popular.
