Why does Riesling smell like gasoline? (part 2)

Riesling is undoubtedly one of the most popular white grapes in the world. It can easily capture everyone’s taste buds, but many people don’t know it well.

Today we take an in-depth look at this fascinating grape variety.

5. Aging potential

While many Riesling wines are suitable for drinking young, Riesling is actually arguably one of the most aging grape varieties, thanks to the Riesling grape’s high acidity and wide range of rich aromas.

The average dry Riesling wine can be aged for about 15 years, and the high-quality dry Riesling wine and some sweet Riesling wines can be aged for up to 30 years.

When young, it is as youthful and beautiful as a princess. After aging, you can smell the aroma of honey, tangerine peel, and ripe peaches, which will leave your lips and teeth fragrant after drinking. Princess, advanced to queen.

6. Oak barrel

Riesling wines are often not aged in oak barrels, which is different from what many people think, because wines with certain aging potential, such as Chardonnay, are often aged in oak barrels.

However, just by virtue of its own high acidity and rich flavor, Riesling has a higher aging potential than other white grape varieties. In addition, because it has not been aged in oak barrels, Riesling wines can better and more directly reflect the terroir of the producing area.

7. All-match

One of the reasons why Riesling is so popular is its versatility in food pairing.

Whether it is paired with meat, vegetables and fruits, or with desserts and snacks, Riesling wine can handle everything. Use it with Chinese food or even Asian food, especially spicy food, it is super perfect.

While eating spicy hot pot and drinking sweet and sour wine, I feel so refreshed.

8. “Sweet”

This is a popular saying now: German Riesling is “little sweet water”.

I don’t agree with it. Many excellent and elegant wines have a mellow and sweet natural sweetness, but the sweetness of Riesling is like the secondary fermentation of champagne. Burgundy’s perfect oak barrel aging is the result of the flavor composition. The key link.

Because in addition to sweetness, Riesling has more fragrant and layered fruit flavors, cool and delicate minerals, and perfect bright acidity.

Riesling is also a variety with multiple faces. Different terroirs and picking seasons make it show different flavors: from sugar-free to extremely sweet; from soft floral aromas, rich fruit aromas, to rich mineral flavors.
